Zoe and I share a love for 80s teen films, and I think this film is definitely one of our favourites, along with such classics as Heathers, Mermaids, Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club and so on.
Girls Just Want To Have Fun came out in 1985, and it is gloriously cheesy, unabashedly girly and totally hilarious. Plus, you get to Sarah Jessica Parker in full 80s fashion flight. Parker plays Janey, an army brat who moves to a new town and meets Lynne (Helen Hunt). Lynne encourages her to break out from under her strict father's thumb and follow her passion for dancing - by entering a dance competition. Cue leotards, totally hot babes in muscle tees and plenty of teen angst and dirty competitive tricks.
Surprise star of the show? Helen Hunt's sick wardrobe and attitude. Stuff went downhill for her with that terrible 90s sitcom she was in, but man, she was cool - berets, a tricked out school uniform, some wack hair.
