Taco Tuesday is an institution for Zoe and I. Sadly, being in different countries means we can't keep it up at the moment, but we'll be back at it with a vengeance when we catch up at Fashion Week in September. I've been trying to keep the tradition in Sydney, but it's never quite the same. Here are a few of the best places in Sydney to have your own Taco Tuesday (best with a girlfriend, and a margarita or cerveza if you can). Mexican food is best when it's cheap, quick and dirty, so don't expect anything glitzy. Next Tuesday, Zoe will bring you her favourite taco joints in Auckland.
Flying Fajita Sisters, Glebe Point Road, Glebe
Hmm. Nice decor, cosy wooden restaurant style. The waitresses wear cute embroidered Mexican shifts. It's very nice but best on Tuesday's only - they have $3 tacos and $3 tequila shots - the rest of the time the mains are about $20, and we're not tight, but for what boils down to rice and beans, that's ridiculous.
Guzman y Gomez (Newtown, Bondi Junction and Kings Cross)
This place is the business! It's cheap as hell, and they let you BYO your own longneck (I just learnt about these when I moved to Australia, woah). My favourite is the tofu burrito with guacamole and pico de gallo. Yum. And, they have those retro looking cans of Mexican mango softdrink that tastes so sweet your teeth hurt. Once I sent Zoe a pixt of me here to make her jealous.
Mad Mex, Crown Street, opposite the Gaslight
Yeah, this place is kind of okay. They serve alcohol (margaritas) and cerveza, which is nice. They pretty much have the same menu as GYG (apparently they are owned by the same people). It's pretty cheap and functional. I like the nude burrito (that's all the stuff you'd get in a burrito only in a bowl). Kinda sucks for vegetarians, cause there is no tofu option and the vegetables they put in are pretty much just onions. Boo.
Ryder, above the Hopetoun in Surry Hills
I went here on a date, and it was kind of weird, mostly cause there was a really shit band playing really loud downstairs and we couldn't talk. And you have to get drinks from downstairs and bring them back up to your table. The food was nice, we had quesadillas.
So far, Guzman y Gomez is definitely the winner in the Sydney Mexican stakes, but I will continue on my mission of unearthing the best ever. Any suggestions are gratefully received.
