I'm pretty sure that The Monkees are lame - and not in a 'so lame, they're cool and ironic' kind of way - they're just simply uncool. But I don't care! After watching the movie Head at a film festival last year, I became slightly obsessed with them. The film is so freakin' weird that I don't really know how to describe it. It's kind of like one big LSD trip. Co-written by Jack Nicholson (yes, that Jack Nicholson), Head follows the band in a series of random scenes, from Mickey fighting a Coke machine in the desert, to Frank Zappa hanging out with a talking cow, and Davy Jones (swoon!) being frightened by a giant eye inside a bathroom cupboard.
The film was an apparent piss take of the band's manufactured image, and was also a big 'fuck you' to their record company and the music industry machine. Who doesn't love a bit of good self-mockery, especially when it combines 60s fashion, groovy music, and surrealism? Watch it and dig it.
