mind your manners

I'm suddenly coming over all Emily Post like, but I'm all about good manners at the moment. Often manners are thought of as archaic, but I think there is something incredibly charming about someone who is polite and respectful; someone who always says please and thank you; and someone who is genuinely interested in others.

Three of the most elegant icons ever, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Jackie O, were known and loved for their charm and decorum.

Juliette Hogan's collection at NZ Fashion Week was called Mind Your Manners. I can imagine well-mannered girls wearing her cute gowns while politely drinking tea in the garden and listening to Au Revoir Simone (or perhaps Santogold's I'm a Lady?).

I shall give Emily Post, the mistress of etiquette, the last word on the matter of manners: "The attributes of a great lady may still be found in the rule of the four S's: Sincerity, Simplicity, Sympathy and Serenity."

Thank you for reading.
