stop your sobbing

Crying is more often than not looked at as being weak, but I think tears can be beautiful and poetic. But I'm thinking of the beauty of Man Ray's Tears, not Gwyneth getting hysterical at the Oscars.

Kate Sylvester designed a gorgeous range in 2005 called Stop Your Sobbing. The range featured tear printed tees, and models at the Fashion Week show carried dainty cotton and lace handkerchiefs. Apparently some in the crowd were moved to tears at the show; I wish I'd been there.

Sam Taylor Wood's Crying Men series featured photographs of Hollywood actors welling up, including the formidable Steve Buscemi.

Two of my favourite artists have written beautiful songs about the act of crying.

Au Revoir Simone - Sad Song
"Play me a sad song because that's what I want to hear.
I want you to make me cry."

Lykke Li - Let it Fall
"In weakest moments I weep, 'cause I like the way tears fit my cheek.
In darkest moments I cry, oh how I love the way tears soothe my face
I like it soft, I like it wet, I like my make up in a mess
so I cry hard, let it fall, and I won't stop until my tears are all shed."
