"She wore a Raspberry beret, the kind you find in a second hand store."
Berets are pretty cliched. There was a stage recently where every second semi-indie girl at a gig in Auckland would be wearing one. I was probably one of them. Cringe... But I love them, because they are so cliched. They evoke the usual stereotypes: the French, schoolgirls, Francophiles, beatniks, artists, intellectuals. Oh, and Prince and Bonnie and Clyde. It’s an extension of my obsession with all things stereotypically French: stripes, the Eiffel Tower, baguettes.
I wear mine sitting on the back of my head, a bit like Mary Kate below - but there are many different ways to wear them. That's probably why they're so popular.
When I went to Paris last year, one thing on my to do list was to sit outside a cafĂ©, smoking a cigarette while wearing a beret. I never did it though because I was too embarrassed. It could have been taking the whole clichĂ© thing just a little too far…
