senior style

Most people don't have enough respect for the elderly. I know that makes me sound so old and old-fashioned and boring blah blah blah. But seriously: they don't. Especially when it comes to style.

I love looking at Advanced Style, which is sort of The Sartorialist but with less skinny fashionistas wearing Balenciaga and more charming silver haired ladies wearing sweaters. It's cute, and it proves that those over 50 can be stylish too. It's a refreshing change from seeing endless photos of "celebrity style icons" who are barely out of their teens.

Younger stars tend to be flash-in-the-pan trends (remember when Sienna Miller was considered a fashion icon?), but those of a certain age have established their own look and continue to champion it. They have a longevity about them - and they don't bow to trends, because they don't need to. I'm thinking of 67-year-old Vivienne Westwood, 61-year-old Patti Smith, Anna Piaggi and Iris Apfel who is in her mid-eighties. Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen are obsessed with 68-year-old Lauren Hutton, and have even featured her in the lookbook for The Row.
