creative couplings

I just read a lovely thought about collaboration over here. It got me to thinking about how much I idolise creative couples. Probably because I can't fathom how you could possibly have both a romantic and working relationship with a boy. My mind boggles.

But I do think it's lovely, and I aspire to doing projects with a boyfriend - although, and cynical I might be, what happens when you break up? Of course, it can be a recipe for disaster - just look at Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, amongst numerous others.

On the more optimistic side, it's an opportunity to create something wonderful - there's little more satisfying than being creatively inspired, and nothing more stimulating than someone who you're attracted to and pushed by intellectually. It's a rare, rare, beautiful thing.

My favourite creative partnerships are:

Nic Briand and Susien Chong of Lover

"A signature push-pull between temptress and renegade, siren and separatist. "We both come from different backgrounds, but we share a similar sensibility and taste level. I (Nic) like things heavier, Wu Tang Clan, comic books, Hendrix, and Susien is softer, Picnic at Hanging Rock, ballet, Roberta Flack."

Matthew Barney and Bjork

The artist and director meets pixie-sweet popstar. Together they have made 'Drawing Restraint 9', a conceptual-nautical-ritual romance. She describes him as "A bit of a submarine", collectively, the NY Times describes them collectively as "an enigma machine". Separately, I adore their respective work, together they are dynamite.

Shona Heath and Tim Walker

He is my favourite fashion photographer, without a doubt. Magical, mystical, marvellous. Pastel cats, lilac horses, rooms full of mirror balls, grand-scale couture. And her styling and set design is the key to it all. I imagine them living this eccentrically English life, with piles of eiderdowns, teapots and louche, casual magic sprinkled about. I love that Walker, when asked in a recent Vogue contributors page how he relaxes answered "with champagne, cocaine and whores'. It's funny if you see his fairytale photography.

Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matin

Some of the most iconic images in fashion in the past 15 years come from this power-duo. Stylist meets photographer and creates work for YSL, Vogue, W, V, Balenciaga, Chloe, ShowStudio - everyone. Amazing. Beautiful.

Charles and Ray Eames

I've written about them before here.

Christo and Jean Claude

This husband and wife are infamous for their 'wrapped' installation art - from significant monuments to the MOCA to entire coastlines. Best of all? They were born on the same day. 13 June, 1935. How cool and creepy is that?

Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner

Wow. Can you imagine?

Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore

Creatively there is little this power couple can't do. Books, incredible music, visual art, curation, fashion design, a record label. They're the King and Queen of the New York noise rock art scene.
