try a little tenderness

If there was one song a boy could put on a mixtape that would make you totally swoon, what would it be?

Mine would be Try A Little Tenderness. Or These Arms Of Mine. Or Love Man…basically anything by Otis Redding. I love him. That scene in Pretty in Pink where Duckie lip-synchs and dances to Try A Little Tenderness in the music store absolutely kills me. The song also played in a season five episode of Sex and the City once and it made me respect the show a little bit again; Donkey even sang a line out of it in Shrek. An Otis track plays when Baby sees Patrick Swayze dancing for the first time in Dirty Dancing. And in High Fidelity, Rob almost wets his pants when he finds a limited edition copy of Otis' You Left the Water Running.

His music is soulful, powerful and yearning; his lyrics simple and beautiful. Think of These Arms of Mine where he sounds like he’ll actually die if his lady friend doesn’t hold him close. He’s a soul god, and to run the risk of sounding like an old woman, they really don’t make music like they used to...
