ladyboy

"I go out in my enormous hat, dressed as a boy, with a fake moustache and people say, 'What a lovely moustache!" - Lou Doillon

"I prefer it when I look like a boy to when I have to dress up like a girl." - Alexa Chung

I like androgynous looks. I like wearing what are traditionally boys clothes - blazers, skinny jeans, sneakers, brogues, Oxford shirts, slim-cut suits, old teeshirts, 'I-don't-have-a-boyfriend' jeans, flannel shirts. It's easy, and sharp and clean. It's sexy by showing little, intelligent, subtle and utterly devoid of brassy, brash overtones.

La Garconne is a novel by Victor Margueritte which was first published in 1922. Literally translated, la garconne means the 'bachelor girl' - linguistically, it's boy with a feminine suffix. It deals with the life of a young woman who, upon learning that her fiancé is cheating on her, decides to live life freely and on her own terms. The title translates as "The Tomboy."

Dior Homme's Petite Taille line has a cult following, and the launch of Stefano Pilati's Edition Unisex line for YSL at New York Fashion Week is eagerly awaited.

The range, inspired by Pilati's Spring 2009 Men's collection, will include washed silk blazers, silk organza trench coats, and pants in crepe de chine which "maintain the men's silhouettes while offering an implicit femininity".

Think Diane Keaton as Annie Hall or Diane Keaton as Diane Keaton. Think Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Kate Moss, Tilda Swinton, Linda Evangelista, Agyness Deyn, Helmut Lang, Armani and Pierre Cardin. Check this video from new Sydney-based label Beat Poet too. Girls and boys feature in the 'lookbook' - all perfectly attired to 'live fast' and 'die a gentleman'.

But most of all, think Rei Kawakubo and Comme des Garçons - literally translated as 'like the boys'.

Indicative of the sexual revolution - no more crippling heels, no more stifling dresses and the true advent of form and function in fashion. Plus, it's cute.
