we love karie, and karie loves...

Karie Higgins makes jewellery that Natalie and I both adore. She's one half of Wellington based design duo d_luxe (with her friend Megan Oliver), whose latest collection called Dream Weaver is absolutely amazing. Honestly, I think I want every single piece: the dreamcatcher necklace, the charm bracelet, the metal braid bracelet, the cross pendant, the Patti bangles and rings, the Crazy Horse pendant in collaboration with another of our favourite duos, Anjali and Rachel from Twenty-seven Names. I had to include one of their campaign images, above. And below, Karie's top ten favourite things right now.

1. THE LOWER EAST SIDE, NYC.
If I could only hang out in one suburb in the world – this would be my pick, a great place to escape the chain stores and chaos of Manhattan in favour of independent fashion boutiques, loads of art galleries and the best restaurants and bars. My number one bar in LES is ‘Schillers’ Liquor bar: the space is comprised of white ceramic subway tiling, safety glass and Neon signage – perfection.

2. EAMES (CHARLES & RAY)
The best modern furniture designers of all time, The Eameses’ were true pioneers and are responsible for some iconic furniture design of the 20th century. (They were a husband and wife team who embraced many design disciplines including: industrial design, graphic design, architecture, art, film and photography). The Eames Molded Plastic Rocker (1948):

3. NINETEEN EIGHTY- FOUR, by GEORGE ORWELL
Brilliant book, and worth purchasing this particular soft cover edition because it has this beautifully austere cover design (published by ‘penguin’).

4. JAK & JIL BLOG
New (ish) fashion blog has lovely photography and a discerning eye, often with a focus on accessories. I’m jumping ship from ‘The Sartorialist’.
5. MASSIMO VIGNELLI
My favourite old school graphic designer. His 1972 NYC subway map has just been re-worked, but the 70’s version is beautiful, wish I had one on my wall. Massimo’s calendar below is HUGE and awesome, originally designed in 1966 – every other month is black text on white, or white text on black.
6. HEDI SLIMANE
Hedi Slimane, what is he not good at?

7. MONOCLE MAGAZINE
Monocle is “a global briefing covering international affairs, business, culture and design”.

8. SHIGERU BAN’S “CURTAIN WALL HOUSE”
In Itabashi, Tokyo, built in 1995. It’s difficult to single out my all time favourite pieces of architecture, but this place is spectacularly impressive.

9. SHIBUYA, TOKYO
Japan is my favourite place for shopping, more specifically the Shibuya district in Tokyo is unbelievably good. You definitely need to be prepared with a superfuture map to decipher the maze like back streets, and a glass or two of Umeshu and soda after a long day on your feet.

10. 30 ROCK
Funniest show on T.V. Tina Fey = genius.
